I am a visual artist and practice-based PhD student.
Harnessing anautoethnographic approach, my research explores the use of drawing andexperimental writing to articulate my personal experience of generalizedanxiety disorder, questioning its impact upon perceptions of the self and howsubjective lived experience is envisaged in the mind. Crucially, it is a meansto narrate myself into ‘being’.
I am concerned with how this intersects with gender and subject-object power relations in artistic discourse. As the historic spectre of ‘hysteria’ continues to pollute societal conceptions of womxn’s mental health, my artistic practice contemplates what a post-voyeuristic conception of feminized anxiety could resemble.
This has previously taken the form of fictitious cartoon semi-human ‘characters’; wordplay, anecdote and a writhing, convulsing use of line. The result is unfixed and impossible to pinpoint – at once playful, fragmented, and phantasmic.
